My New Best Friend

Friends are the best thing in the world.  Throughout my life I’ve been blessed with many wonderful friends.

I have a new best friend and I don’t like her/him at all.  The new friend is 3am.  I can’t decide if 3 (I call her/him that for short) is a male or a female.  I tend to think that 3 is a male because shouldn’t it be true that only a man would be that exasperating and annoying.  A female friend should be more kind, considerate and have my best interest at heart.  Men were put here to drive us a little crazy. But somehow I think that 3 is a female.

3 was only with me once in a while for quite a long time.  Some days coming to visit, some days leaving me to my real friend…6am.  But sadly it seems that 3 has settled in, pulled up a chair and made herself at home.  She nudges me awake and then wants to talk…she wants to remind me of all the things I need to do to get ready for our trip.  Not to talk about how beautiful it will be when we’re in New Mexico or about how happy we’ll be spending some time in our house.

No, 3 wants to remind me not to forget to write down on my list so I don’t forget the salad bowl and individual bowls, Plus the salad fork and spoon.  Yes, they’ll be perfect to have in the house during out visit, I make salads all the time and I might as well use this wonderful gift I was given quite a few years ago rather than letting it sit in a cupboard.  I know I’ll be glad it’s there, but do we really have to talk about it now?!

3 wants me to ruminate (stew my Mother would have said) about whether Ralph can possibly be ready to leave on time on our projected departure date or will we end up leaving an entire day late because he can’t find some vital pencil or pen or sketch pad (or worse yet his glasses or his driver’s license-2 things that actually have been misplaced and kept us from leaving on a trip on time.)

I’m doing my part.  I got his suitcases out for him.  I’ve told him to give me all laundry that he’d like me to wash before we leave (he actually DID this yesterday!!!) I’ve offered to help him find things that are misplaced (like the special TV antennas he bought Specifically for the trip because we don’t have cable at the house in NM yet and we get exactly 3 stations.)  “Oh, that’s ok, I’ll find them!” No he won’t because he still has 2 pieces of artwork to finish that he insists on doing before we leave.

Then of course there’s the surprise party we have to go to for which I almost blew the surprise because who would think the honoree’s husband would call and have me on the speaker phone when I ask if it’s a surprise?!?  I think it was ok, but some people hold a grudge,  so I may be on shaky ground.

On top of all this…when we get to New Mexico there’s a 2 hour time difference…I hope not, but I’m afraid when I get there, I’ll be introducing you to my Newer Best Friend…1AM!!! Well, I can always read!  Just have to find a comfortable chair…oh, no…can we fit a Chair in the car!?!?!

Happy Monday!

  1. oh, gosh, i feel for you fran…this is one friend that you would like to pass along to someone else!!
you do have a lot on your mind right now, with the trip, and packing…it’s no wonder your mind is having a hard time quieting down!.
i do know how you feel: i have been an “anxious sleeper” since childhood and have had bouts of either waking at 3 a.m.-ish or not being able to fall asleep, over the years. as with you, it all relates back to stress and thinking too much. i do not have any remedies for you! i just hope that the 3 a.m. friend can be left back in nj when you hit the road this weekend!

    • Thanks, Cathy! I hope so too! I don’t usually have trouble falling asleep. That may be part of my problem, I fall asleep at sometimes 8:30 or 9pm…sleep for a while, then wake up! Guess I should work on trying not to fall asleep too early. I thought that with my added exercise, it would be better, but not so. Have a great day!!

  2. Oh no! That is so hard and I completely understand as I am an early riser anyway, especially when I’ve got a lot on my mind. If I wake up after 3 am I cannot get back to sleep. It’s 5:20 a.m. now and I’ve been up since 4:00. I hope your 3 a.m. friend departs soon.

    • Thanks, Diane! I was never a real early riser until I got a job where I had to get up 3:50am in order to get my exercise in and then get to my long commute. I like being up early, but this is just a little earlier than I like. It’ll probably settle down eventually. Thanks!!

  3. Ahh, I have not yet been introduced to 3am, but 4am and I are good friends. In fact, we meet up and hang out quite often, even on weekends. But hey, if you ARE up at 1am, at leas you’ll be up at 1am…IN NEW MEXICO 🙂

  4. Oh…that is just not fun. Funny…my family marvels at my getting up before 7, but 3 and I are barely acquainted…although stewing/ruminating are practically hobbies for me!

    • Zo…I’ve been worrying for so long, I forget how not to. It’s dumb, because I’m really quite lucky overall in my life and I don’t have That many things to worry about, except for finances. I think it’s in my genes…

Hi Fran. I feel your pain. I have my own 3, and sometimes 4 stops by for a visit. May both of our friends be banished to dreamland soon. Take care.

  6. Oh my goodness, i really feel for you too! I’m usually up at that time with the little stinker 🙂 I hope your BFF lets you sleep soon!!!

  7. Fran I am really sorry you are not sleeping well. I have the same issue but so far 3 is more of an occasional friend. Or, at least she only has a little to say and then lets me sleep again.

I have to say though, despite your pain, I just LOVED this post. I was giggling through the whole thing. Nice job!
