P is for Peace or Piece or Peas

The Blogging A to Z Challenge comes with a built-in challenge.  Some days, I’m not looking for a challenge, but it seems that life in general poses those for us each day.

Today’s challenge is the letter P.

I seek peace and tranquility.  I live in chaos and confusion.  Some of it is my physical surroundings, some of it is in my mind.  

I have over the past year or so, found meditation.  I am not currently meditating.  For me, meditating is something I have to make part of my routine.  Before going to Florida in February, I had meditated for 106 days without a break.  I was pretty proud of myself for that.  While there, it wasn’t practical for me to do it.  No time when I was totally alone.  Since coming back to New Jersey, I have gotten out of the habit.  I hate when that happens.

I find myself longing for that serenity that I feel when I meditate that carries me through the day.  I think that daylight savings time might be part of the problem.  It used to be dark when I got up.  I sat down arranged things, lit my candle and I was surrounded by shadows except for my candle.  Now it’s getting on to dawn when I get up, the birds are doing their birdy things outside and I find it hard to concentrate.

I need to find a way to do my meditation in spite of these distractions.  I need to feel that peace in the early morning.  Nothing is really stopping me but Me.  I commit now that I will do it tomorrow morning and keep it up.  There are no obstacles except myself.  

If you’ve never meditated, you should try it.  It may not bring you the peace you seek, but it will help to calm you and give you a good start to the day.  Anybody out there with me?  Let me know if you meditate. If you don’t, think about starting.  I’ll report on my progress and you report on yours.

    fingers crossed that you can get back to the meditating, fran. maybe find another room that is darker, or just accept the dawn light use it to your advantage?? that is wonderful that you feel the benefits throughout the rest of your day when you do meditate.
    i have not formally meditated, but yoga is all about the breath – that is the foundation of practice. in costa rica, i will be learning to meditate! i am excited to learn more!

  2. I’ve been meditating a lot lately. Wonderful things happen when you do. Try putting in ear buds and listening to peaceful music. You could probably pop a CD into your computor and hook up the ear buds to that. It might drown out some of the noise…actually, when I meditate when I come home from work or before I go to work, the birds become part of the meditation…try that. Good Luck!

    • I always say to myself that the bird sounds are the perfect accompaniment but I start listening more them (because they’re so cool)than I am concentrating on my meditation. I’ll try combining them. Thanks, Ms. Ele!

  3. We do a form of meditation at church. During the sacrament we have about 10 minutes to ponder the sacrifices of our Savior and just be still.

  4. It’s one of those things that I always think I should do, and then I never get around to it. *sigh* I admire your tenacity with doing it 106 days in a row. That’s really impressive!

    • You know, Melonie, I never could do it either. Funny thing for me, I’m either in it or I’m out of it. Working to get myself back in. Start with 5 minutes. Nothing special, just sit and be still. It’s amazing. It will grow on you!

  6. I am not a good meditator, but I love to get a massage… I find it to be the easiest way for me to let go.

    • Laura, we all have to find what works for us as an individual. I’ve never had a message. It always sounds good until someone says “let’s schedule a message” and I always find something else to do. I don’t know why.

  7. I’ve been out of the habit of meditating for a while now. I want to get back to it.

    I’m glad you included the quotation from the Dalai Lama. How can we be at peace with others when we are not at peace with ourself?
